The Seasons Are Changing. And So Am I.
Perimenopause, Seasonal Change, and Listening to the Body
What the Seasons are Teaching me about Perimenopause.
As winter slowly gives way to spring, the natural world reminds us that change rarely happens all at once. For many women, perimenopause can feel like a similar seasonal transition within the body, bringing unexpected shifts in energy, mood, sleep, and rhythm. This spring, I’m noticing how closely my own internal changes mirror the quiet emergence happening in the natural world.
Last week, I found myself standing on the corner of my street facing the sun. Eyes closed letting the warmth of the sun fill every cell. I turned and noticed the bloom of roses in my neighbor’s front garden.
There is a particular tenderness to March.
The light begins to shift.
The air is softening.
And something inside us begins to stir.
For me, March is the true beginning of the year. Not only does March mark the Spring Equinox on March 22, but it’s also my birth month. So it makes sense for me that there is an aliveness I start to feel this month.
I start to feel a bit lighter. I feel the warmth of the sun more and more. I feel the energy within me wanting to propel me towards something.
Spring does not arrive all at once though. It whispers through the small flowers that begin to peep through the frost. It stretches more light into each day. It hesitates with the teases of a warm afternoon and the tipping back into the cold of winter. It’s a slow return to light and re-birthing something within and around us.

And if we are paying attention, our bodies are doing the same.
This year, I’m especially aware of that truth.
I’ll be 47 at the end of the month and I’m coming face-to-face with the shifts in my own body as a woman. I can feel the physical and emotional shift of my hormones. As women, we are all too familiar with the monthly shifts in our body and hormones, and as we age those shifts get more extreme, more felt.
The Seasons Inside the Body: Understanding Perimenopause as a Time of Change
I feel the seasons inside my own body more clearly than ever. Sudden heat where there was once steadiness. Restlessness where there was once seeming predictability. Tidal waves instead of the gentle currents I knew how to surf.
This period of time has created some turbulence, uncertainty and it’s also humbled me. It’s had me look deeply inward. To not suffer in silence. To not ignore the signs. To not just push through the days and weeks, but be intentional about where I am in my life and what my true needs are.
This period of time has reminded me that change is not a problem to fix– it is a rhythm to honor.
Just as winter does not snap into spring overnight, our bodies do not leap from one phase to the next without recalibration. There is a thawing. A renegotiation. A rebalancing of energies. And that’s exactly where I am right now.
I’m recalibrating and rebalancing my energies, one day at a time.

What Spring Teaches Us About Hormonal Shifts and Nervous System Balance
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, spring is governed by the Liver– the organ of vision, planning, and forward movement. But when energy rises too quickly, it can show up as irritability, tension, frustration, heat.
In Ayurveda (the Life Science of Yoga), this is the time when Kapha begins to melt– heaviness loosens, stagnation clears, and movement returns.
But here’s what I’ve learned in my own system:
Emergence must be gentle.
If we push into the light too quickly– more productivity, more output, more stimulation– we override the very system that is trying to recalibrate.
And this is what I’m recognizing right now for myself. I cannot override or outsmart the shifts of the season I’m going through right now. I cannot hack my way into more productivity or to be the woman I was in my 20s or 30s, or even 2 years ago. Nature and physiology are asking me to gently soften and to move forward with intention. To create stability deep within, the home within myself.
A Simple Breath Practice to Support Nervous System Balance
One of the practices I am returning to is Nadi Shodhana, alternate nostril breathing.
It’s simple, almost quiet in its power. But it reminds my body that it doesn’t have to choose between activation and rest. It can hold both. It can move forward without abandoning steadiness.
I recorded a short guided practice for you. If your energy feels uneven, scattered, or emotionally tender this month (or anytime), try it. Let it be a small anchor as everything shifts, both within yourself and in the world.
Learning to Move With the Seasons Instead of Against Them
As we approach the Spring Equinox, that moment of equal light and dark, I’m holding the intention of balance over force.
And if you feel like you’d like more structured support during this transition, I’ll be opening the doors to my Spring Reset beginning April 5.
This is a 4-week immersion where we gently:
Regulate the nervous system as energy rises
Work with the energy of the season and emotional release
Lighten winter stagnation without shocking the system
Practice embodied ritual and seasonal alignment
Build capacity for growth without burnout
It’s not about fixing yourself.
It’s about learning how to move with change — instead of bracing against it.
If your body has been whispering for steadiness…
If you feel both the call to grow and the need to go slowly…
If this season feels bigger than just a calendar shift…
I would be honored to walk it with you.

For now, breathe.
Let the light come in gradually.
Trust that your pace is sacred.
